And one of the benefits of being under Uncle Sam's umbrella is that the USPS (yeah, the post office) feels strongly about consistent national pricing. So? Well, first class mail, parcel post and priority mail are very cost effective (read: cheap) shipping methods to Hawaii even when UPS or FedEX are prohibitively expensive. You can save money by purchasing items at discounted prices from Internet retailers that ship via USPS or retailers that want Hawaii business and eat the extra costs to provide the same reasonable shipping rates to Hawaii that they provide to mainland customers. Even though you are paying shipping, you still save money! If you don't get totally hung up on finding 'free shipping', the stores below and to the right and left with reasonable shipping costs open up a whole world of possibilities to Hawaii residents. One of my favorite Internet marketplaces is eBay. You can find stuff at great prices that you can't find anywhere else, and many sellers on eBay will ship to Hawaii using USPS Priority Mail or Parcel Post. So if you save $20 on that fantastic trendy top that can't even be found in Hawaii, and spend $5 for shipping, you still come out $15 ahead. I haven't figured out a way for you to view only sellers that ship USPS with no markup, but eBay will generally let you punch in your zip code and then eBay will provide shipping costs next to the current cost of the item. USPS shipping costs will generally be in the single digits for most items, but regardless of method of shipping, if the total price is right, buy it.

Buy from sellers with a lot of positive feedback.
Avoid sellers that cram profit into shipping costs. Some sellers will only ship via UPS or Fedex and will include a markup on top of that.
Buying large and heavy items from the mainland generally doesn't make economic sense.

You may be surprised that I have listed some bricks-and-mortar establishments located in Hawaii in this category like and that you can visit when you shop Hawaii. You may be thinking "if all these stores are physically located in Hawaii and don't differ free shipping for online purchases, why buy online?" Two reasons, web-only specials and products not available in Hawaii stores. Wanna buy some cold weather fashions for your upcoming trip to the mainland? Good luck finding fashionable and reasonably priced stuff in a Hawaii shop, but check out that online selection! Have your favorite jacket shipped to Hawaii at a reasonable cost, and if doesn't fit or isn't as cool on you as it was on that hot online model, just return it the local store.
